Why Burton on Trent is the perfect commuter town

If you cast your eyes south to Buckinghamshire, the town of roundabouts and concrete cows may catch your eye. We’re talking about Milton Keynes, or MK, the place with great retail outlets and grid boulevards. It’s a town that’s derided and loved in equal measure, but it has something in common with Burton – a great commuter place.

MK was founded as a new town and its position was carefully determined. It is located 47 miles from Cambridge, Birmingham, London, Leicester. All four are 47 miles away and this was intentional so that MK would become a commuter hub to these places by road and rail.

What happened though, over time, is that Milton Keynes became a commuter hub in its own right and many people and businesses have settled there.

Burton on Trent, our base, has a much longer history, and, we’re biased, we know, but much better scenery being in Staffordshire, close to the Peak District.

We have other advantages too apart from scenery and real cows in fields – Burton’s average sold property price is £100,000 lower than Milton Keynes and it is actually closer to many major cities.

Burton then is a great commuter town and here’s why:

  1. Birmingham, the UK’s second city takes just 28 minutes to reach by train from Burton and is just 30 miles away.
  2. Stoke-on-Trent has a more challenging rail route but a similar road distance.
  3. Derby city centre is just 12 miles distant and can be reached in just 14 minutes by train which run every 30 minutes.
  4. Nottingham is commutable too at under 30 miles.
  5. If you’re more adventurous, for work or leisure, London is under 2 hours by train, as is Manchester.

Now we’re not suggesting anyone working in London or Manchester should consider Burton, but we do know that other parts of the country, like Devon, Cornwall, Derbyshire, Norfolk and Suffolk have seen an influx of people.

Why?

Because working from home is now an accepted norm and individuals are realising they can complete tasks in bedroom 3, a garden office or loft conversion in Burton or Branston.

Burton has a very positive property market too – a quick glance at Rightmove, for example, shows 812 properties listed, with over 600 sold. There’s properties to suit every budget and lifestyle – you can read what people think of the town here.
